Definition Aegis Radar System

A multifunction phased-array radar which performs air and surface surveilance by the controlled emission and reception of radio frequency energy. The system has the capability to search and automatically detect and track both air and surface targets. It is designed to operate and differentiate multiple targets in heavy surface, air clutter and electronic counter-measure environments. It provides missile midcourse guidance commands and maintains a cummunication link through-out the missile's flight.
